What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is an ancient practice that is becoming increasingly relevant in the modern world. Thai massage uses yoga-like movement and stretching to help relieve stiffness and create more flexibility in the body. It creates more range of motion and a relaxed, energized feeling. The Thai treatment can help clients understand where they are holding tension in the body, how their breathing can help them relax, and ways to slow down the mind. It can also inform clients of how their habits in the world can have direct impacts on their bodies. Thai massage is one of the great gifts that Thailand has given to the people in the west.

How is Chicago School of Thai Massage different from other schools?

At Chicago School of Thai Massage, we recognize that Thai massage is a challenging practice that requires time, energy and patience. If it is not practiced correctly, it can take a toll on the practitioners physical and mental health. We want all practitioners to have a long, satisfying, and injury-free career. In order for this to become a reality, a lot of practice and training is required. By offering this basic program, we are starting you down that path.

What are the specific program offerings?

  • 162 hours of direct instruction over a variety of interesting topics threading through 6 three day weekends
  • 15 hours of supervised practice (on Thursday nights before the weekend begins)
  • 14 hours of student clinic
  • 4 hours of community service
  • Guest teachers
  • Instructional DVD's and manuals

What if I just want to take one or two weekends, but not the whole six months?

We have made a conscious choice to encourage people to honor the integrity of the practice by asking for a more serious commitment. That means, students will be required to take the entire six month program. That being said, we will be offering individual weekend workshops for those who are looking for an introduction to Thai massage or continuing education (CE).

I live outside of Chicago but I still want to join the school. Is that possible?

We have designed the program such that it takes place during just one long weekend a month. If you live within three hours of Chicago, you might decide that it’s worth the drive. We have many students in town who can put you up for the three nights you would be here each month.

If you live in one of the cities that Southwest airlines offers $100 round trip tickets, that might be an expense you are willing to absorb in order to participate.

Do I need to have massage experience to enter the program?

No. You just need to be able to spend time on your knees on the floor.

It looks interesting but I have never had a Thai massage before. Can I still enroll?

Yes, however, we highly encourage you to get a professional Thai massage before you begin studies. The directors of the school offer discounted sessions for those who are considering enrolling.

What is the cost of the program?

The tuition for the entire program is $2700.00

Early Registration Cost: $2350
Due in full by December 22, 2008 – one month prior to the start of the program.

A $300 deposit holds your space in the 6 month course.

50 percent once the second weekend begins

What if I miss a day or a weekend?

We encourage you not to miss anything but we understand that emergencies can come up. We have a number of opportunities for you to make up class time missed.

Upon completion of the school, will I be able to apply to be an RTT (Registered Thai Therapist) with the Thai Healing Alliance?

In order to become an RTT, you must have completed 150 hours of coursework as well as 50 documented practice sessions. You must also wait a full year from the date of your first Thai massage class. If upon entering the school you have never taken a Thai massage class before, you will need to wait one year from the date of the first class before you can apply. Chicago School of Thai Massage's program is 162 hours so it more than satisfies the 150 hour requirement. Chicago School of Thai Massage requires 30 documented practice sessions in the six month program. You will need to document 20 more before you can apply for RTT status.
